Smart Meters

A smart meter is a digital electric meter that collects electricity usage information and sends that data to the local utility through a secure telecommunications connection.

Smart meters provide a number of benefits. They reduce the number of estimated bills through automated readings, help us more quickly respond to power outages, and help customers learn more about their energy use. Plus, the smart meters we’re installing are UL certified and have been tested and proven by manufacturers to be safe and secure.

We continue to be active throughout our utility service area in the research, development and deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).

Ohio

FirstEnergy’s Ohio utilities – Ohio Edison, Toledo Edison and The Illuminating Company – have installed more than 710,000 smart meters on customers’ homes and businesses throughout our Ohio service area. This effort is part of a three-year investment approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to modernize the electric distribution system in Ohio with advanced automation equipment, real-time voltage controls and the installation of smart meters.

Pennsylvania

FirstEnergy's Pennsylvania utilities – Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power and West Penn Power – have installed smart meters on more than 2 million homes and businesses throughout our Pennsylvania service areas. This effort is in response to Pennsylvania Act 129*, which requires all large electric utilities in Pennsylvania to install smart meters.

New Jersey

Jersey Central Power & Light has begun installing smart meters on customers’ homes and businesses throughout our service area. The Company’s plan, as approved by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, will modernize the electric distribution system in New Jersey with the installation of 1.1 million smart meters.
