NJ Energy Bill Watch Program
As part of NJ Bill S3620, which requires utility companies to establish an “Energy Bill Watch” program, Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) will be offering text and email alerts, beginning March 25, 2026, to help customers better understand their monthly usage and expected costs.
Most JCP&L residential customers who have a smart meter installed at their home will automatically receive email alerts as part of program requirements. This means you will receive a 10-day and 20-day email alert during your billing cycle to let you know how much electricity you’ve used so far and the estimated cost for that usage.
View the FAQS below for more information about the program and how it can help you manage energy costs.
-
I received an email from JCP&L about my usage and estimated bill amount, but I did not request this information. Why did this happen?
As part of NJ Bill S3620 – Energy Bill Watch – we are required to automatically enroll qualified customers in email alerts to advise you of your electricity usage and estimated costs at both 10 and 20 days into your billing cycle.
If you do not wish to receive this alert, you can opt out in your online account. You can also sign up to receive this alert via text message or enroll in additional Bill Watch alerts. Please see below for more information.
-
Who qualifies for these alerts?
The New Jersey Energy Bill Watch alerts are for residential customers who have a smart meter installed at their property. The smart meter must be fully operational to receive the alerts, meaning the meter is transmitting your usage data to us daily.
Note that all residential customers, regardless of smart meter status, can still receive outage and billing alerts.
Customers enrolled in net metering are not eligible for Energy Bill Watch alerts at this time.
-
Why was I not automatically enrolled in Bill Watch 10-Day and 20-Day Alerts like some of my neighbors?
You may not have been auto enrolled for the following reasons:
- You do not have a fully operational smart meter installed
- You are not a residential customer
- We do not have a valid email address on file for your account
- You are a net metering customer
- You have an electric account that is protected for voice interactions through a password that must be provided to the agent or by some other means·
If you have any questions, contact our Customer Care Center. -

You can reply STOP to a text message you receive to stop receiving alerts for that topic or STOP ALL to unsubscribe to all text alerts. You may also update your alert preferences online.
-
How are you ensuring the estimated cost for my usage is accurate?
Prior to sending the text or email alert, our process considers currently available rate information, including but not limited to seasonal changes and any recent commission approved rate adjustments.
-
How will the estimated cost be reflected if I receive bill assistance or am on a payment plan?
The alert will only include your current usage amount and estimated cost for that usage. The amount will not reflect any of the following:
- Prior unpaid balance
- Payment plans
- Budget plans
- Assistance programs
- Unmetered services like an outdoor area light
- Special discounts such as Community Solar
-
Does having a third-party supplier change how the alerts work?
Most customers who shop for electricity supply can receive Bill Watch 10 and 20 Day, Bill Watch Threshold and Bill Watch Average Daily alerts as normal.
In some cases, the supplier provides us with a total cost for usage instead of a supply rate that we then calculate on their behalf. If this applies to your account, it shows as “Rate: Bill_Ready” on your bill under Billing Information for Your Alternate Supplier. Bill Watch Threshold alerts are unavailable for Bill Ready accounts. You can still receive Bill Watch 10 and 20 Day and Bill Watch Average Daily alerts but will receive usage details only and not an estimated cost.
If you have a third-party supplier and are billed separately by the supplier, Bill Watch Threshold alerts are not available. You can still receive Bill Watch 10 and 20 Day and Bill Watch Average Daily alerts but will receive usage details only and not an estimated cost.
-
What if I have two or more meters at my address?
If you have multiple electric meters at your address, you will receive one alert that contains usage and cost information for all meters.
-
I am enrolled in the Time-of-Day rate. How will this impact alerts?
Customers on a Time-of-Day rate are still eligible for Energy Bill Watch alerts. Estimations of usage and cost are calculated based on On and Off Peak usage for the current bill cycle. The estimated cost will reflect current rate information, including but not limited to seasonal changes and any recent commission approved rate adjustments.
