New Jersey Customers Can Earn Rebates for Reycling Old Appliances
Do you have older appliances in your home, such as an extra fridge in the garage? While they might seem helpful, older, inefficient models could be wasting energy and costing you unnecessary money on your electric bill.
With JCP&L’s Appliance Recycling program, you can save energy and receive an incentive by simply recycling your old appliances. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also benefit the environment.
Benefits of recycling an old appliance
Properly recycling an older appliance and replacing it with a newer, more energy-efficient appliance – like one that is ENERGY STAR® certified – can help you save energy and money on your monthly electric bill. ENERGY STAR certified appliances utilize advanced technology and high-performance that can deliver energy savings. For example, ENERGY STAR certified freezers are 10% more efficient than models that meet the minimum standards and refrigerators are about 9% more energy efficient. Plus, they last longer, too!
Recycling your old appliances is also good for the environment. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the proper recycling of refrigerators has prevented billions of pounds of materials from going to landfills. Responsibly recycling an appliance also helps ensure toxic materials are handled properly.
How it works
In 2024, JCP&L customers recycled 5,480 appliances through our Appliance Recycling program, including 3,854 refrigerators. Here’s how the program works:
You can earn $100 per unit by recycling a working refrigerator or freezer, and an additional rebate up to $50 when you recycle a room air conditioner or dehumidifier. Air conditioners and dehumidifiers must be recycled along with a refrigerator or freezer. To qualify:
You must be an electric customer of JCP&L
You must own the appliance(s)
Refrigerators and freezers must be 10 – 30 cubic feet, plugged in and operating (cooling) at the time of the scheduled pickup
Limit of two refrigerators or freezers and up to three air conditioners or dehumidifiers per calendar year
Participation is easy! You can schedule a time for us to pick up your appliance(s) on our website or by calling our program vendor, CLEAResult, at 1-888-314-8141.
Once your pickup time is confirmed, CLEAResult will pick up your appliance(s) and recycle it responsibly based on the EPA’s Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) program guidelines. Your incentive check will be mailed to you within six weeks after your appliance(s) is picked up.
Please note that this is not an appliance replacement program. Your old appliance will be removed and recycled and will not be replaced with a new appliance.
