Company History
FirstEnergy Corp. was formed in 1997 through the merger of Ohio Edison Company and Centerior Energy Corporation. Through this merger, FirstEnergy became the holding company for electric utilities serving 2.2 million customers across 13,000 miles of northern and central Ohio and western Pennsylvania. In addition to distribution and transmission facilities, the new company controlled approximately 12,000 megawatts of generating capacity.
Subsequent mergers with the former GPU, Inc. in 2001 and Allegheny Energy in 2011 expanded FirstEnergy’s service territory and generation fleet across the Mid-Atlantic region. In 2020, FirstEnergy separated from its commodity-exposed generation business to focus on its fully regulated distribution, transmission and generation operations.
Today, FirstEnergy comprises one of the nation's largest investor-owned electric systems, based on serving 6 million customers across 65,000 miles of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland and New York. The company’s transmission subsidiaries operate approximately 24,000 miles of transmission lines that connect the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions.
Dedicated to integrity, safety, reliability and operational excellence, FirstEnergy is focused on becoming a premier electric company that delivers value to investors and superior service to customers.
