John W. Somerhalder II   

Vice Chairperson and Executive Director

John W. Somerhalder joined FirstEnergy in 2021 as vice chairperson and executive director. He is leading FirstEnergy's efforts to rebuild trust with external stakeholders and supporting the senior leadership team’s efforts to achieve its priorities and strengthen the company's governance and compliance functions.

In addition to his role at FirstEnergy, he serves as a director of Gulfport Energy Corp., Piedmont Healthcare and the Gas Technology Institute. Previously he was a director of Centerpoint Energy, Inc.; a director and board chairman of Enable Midstream Partners, LP; a director at SunCoke Energy Partners GP LLC; and a director at Crestwood Equity GP LLC, the general partner of Crestwood Equity Partners LP. He also served as interim president and chief executive officer of CenterPoint Energy, Inc., interim president and chief executive officer of Colonial Pipeline Company, and from 2006 until his retirement in 2015, he was president and chief executive officer of AGL Resources Inc., a former publicly traded energy services holding company. He served as chairman of AGL Resources board of directors from 2007 to 2015.

Earlier in his career, Somerhalder served in a number of roles with El Paso Corporation, a publicly traded natural gas and related energy products provider, where he spent almost 30 years, starting his career as an engineer and holding progressively more responsible leadership roles before being named president of El Paso Pipeline Group and executive vice president of El Paso Corporation. 

Strah

Steve Strah is president and chief executive officer, FIrstEnergy Corp.  

Strah began his career with The Illuminating Company in 1984. He later served as director of Business Services for FirstEnergy's Northern Region – Ohio, and director of Operations Support Services for the company's Western Region – Ohio. In 2001, he was named president of the Northern Region for Jersey Central Power & Light, and in 2005, he was named regional president of Ohio Edison. He was promoted to vice president, Distribution Support, for FirstEnergy Utilities in 2011. and he was named senior vice president and president of FirstEnergy Utilities in 2015. He was elected senior vice president and chief financial officer of FirstEnergy in March 2018, and was elected president in May 2020. He was appointed president and acting CEO in October 2020. He was named to his current position in March 2021. 

Belcher

Samuel L. Belcher

Sam Belcher is responsible for FirstEnergy’s 10 regulated electric utility operating companies in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, West Virginia, Maryland and New York, as well as the company’s transmission assets and investments. He is also responsible for energy delivery, customer service, compliance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission transmission requirements, and energy efficiency activities. 

Belcher joined FENOC as senior vice president and chief operating officer in 2012 from Constellation Energy Nuclear Group, where he was senior vice president, Site Operations. Earlier, he held the positions of site vice president and plant general manager at Constellation’s Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station. Prior to Constellation, Belcher served as director of Fleet Operations at FENOC and held a number of operations leadership positions with Energy Northwest’s Columbia Generating Station and Entergy Nuclear’s River Bend and Arkansas Nuclear One.

He was named president and chief nuclear officer for FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., in 2015, and named to his current position effective March 2018.

Gaines

Bennett L. Gaines

Bennett Gaines is responsible for the delivery of information technology (IT) services, including FirstEnergy’s corporate IT strategy and governance process, as well as the company’s communications and data network. He also is responsible for both physical and cyber corporate security, flight operations and supply chain. He was appointed to his current position in 2012. In 2020, he also gained responsibility for the company's corporate real estate function.

Gaines joined FirstEnergy in 2006 as vice president, Information Technology/Corporate Security and chief information officer. Earlier in his career, he was vice president and chief information officer at Cincinnati-based Cinergy Corp., where he was responsible for the delivery of IT services and telecommunications and network operations.

Park

Hyun Park

Hyun Park joined FirstEnergy in 2021 as senior vice president and chief legal officer for FirstEnergy. He is responsible for the company's Legal, Risk & Internal Audit departments and oversees the company’s ethics and compliance program. 

Previously, Park was partner and general counsel of LimNexus LLP, where he advised clients on a wide variety of complex matters, including crisis management, litigation and corporate transactions. Prior to joining LimNexus in October 2019, he was Of Counsel at Latham & Watkins LLP. From 2006 to 2017, Park served as senior vice president and general counsel for PG&E Corporation and its businesses, including its principal subsidiary, Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Prior to joining PG&E Corporation, he was vice president, general counsel and secretary of Allegheny Energy, Inc. and previously served as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary of Sithe Energies, Inc. He began his career at Latham & Watkins and became an equity partner there. 

 

Taylor

K. Jon Taylor

Jon Taylor is senior vice president and chief financial officer for FirstEnergy, with responsibility for accounting, treasury and investor relations. 

Taylor joined FirstEnergy in 2009. He progressed through various senior level financial positions, including assistant controller FirstEnergy Utilities and assistant controller FirstEnergy Solutions and FirstEnergy Generation. In October 2012, he was promoted to vice president and assistant controller for FirstEnergy Corp, and he was named vice president, controller and chief accounting officer in 2013. In March 2018, Taylor was named president of Ohio Operations. He was promoted to his vice president, FirstEnergy Utilities in April 2019, and elected to his current position in May 2020.

Before joining FirstEnergy, Taylor worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP.

Walker

Christine Walker leads FirstEnergy's overall human resources function, including talent management, total rewards, diversity & inclusion, labor relations and safety.

Walker began her career with GPU, Inc., in the Information Technology organization and held various positions in Human Resources and Customer Service prior to GPU's merger with FirstEnergy in 2001. She was promoted to director, Compensation and Retirement programs in 2005, to executive director, Human Resources, in 2011, and named to executive director, Talent Management, in 2016. She was named vice president, Human Resources, in 2018, and was promoted to her current position in May 2019.

Benz

Gary Benz

Gary Benz leads the ongoing refinement of FirstEnergy's corporate strategy and long-term business forecast, monitors strategy implementation, and oversees development of new business opportunities. He was appointed to his current position in June 2015. In 2020 he also assumed responsibility for the company's sales and marketing and product development functions, as well as the Innovation Center.  

Benz joined the company in 1989 as an attorney. He was promoted to senior counsel in 1997 and associate general counsel in 2000. He was named director of Business Development in 2009 and executive director in 2011. He was promoted to vice president of Supply Chain in 2012.

Eileen Mikkelsen

Eileen Mikkelsen is responsible for state and federal regulatory economics, rate design, revenue requirements and electric load research as well as economic and sales forecasting. She was named to her current position in 2016. In 2020 she also became acting vice president for external affairs. 

Mikkelsen began her career with the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company in 1982 in Internal Auditing. Following the 1997 merger of Centerior and Ohio Edison that formed FirstEnergy, she became director of Business Planning for the new company. Later, she held various strategy, planning and market intelligence roles at FirstEnergy Solutions (FES), including director of FES Energy Consulting. Mikkelsen returned to FirstEnergy in 2010 as director of Rates and Regulatory Affairs. 

Fernández

Antonio Fernández

Vice President and Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer

As chief ethics and compliance officer, Antonio Fernández leads a dedicated team of compliance professionals with a focus on strengthening the company's ethics and compliance function. He reports to the senior vice president and chief legal officer as well as the Audit Committee of the Board, and collaborates closely with the compliance oversight subcommittee of the Audit Committee.

Fernández joined FirstEnergy in April 2021 after five years as chief compliance, NERC & privacy officer of Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG), where he led PSEG’s ethics, compliance and privacy programs, advised senior management and the Board of Directors on the company’s compliance program and provided advice on ethics, compliance, privacy and cybersecurity matters. Before joining PSEG in 2016, he was global ombuds leader and executive counsel for GE Power. During his five years at GE, he held various roles of increasing responsibility in GE’s compliance program, including serving as chief compliance officer for GE’s nuclear business and as GE’s corporate ombuds leader. Earlier in his career, Fernández was a senior attorney for Florida Power & Light from 2007 to 2011 and nuclear counsel for Pacific Gas and Electric Company from 2005 to 2007. He began his career at the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of the General Counsel in its Honors Program.

Lisowski

Jason J. Lisowski is vice president, controller and chief accounting officer, responsible for the controller, tax, and accounting functions across FirstEnergy.

Lisowski joined the company in 2004 as an assistant accountant, progressing through professional accountant and analyst positions before being named manager, Corporate Budgeting & Forecasting, in 2010. Lisowski was promoted to manager, Financial Reporting and Technical Accounting in 2011. He advanced to assistant controller, FES and FirstEnergy Generation in 2012, and was named controller and treasurer for FES in 2017. He was named to his current position in March 2018.

As vice president of investor relations since 2011, Irene Prezelj is responsible for managing the company's relationships with the investment community. In addition, she was named acting vice president of communications, corporate affairs and community involvement in 2020.

Prezelj joined the company in 1984, and progressed through positions in the Marketing, Public Affairs and Market Intelligence departments. She became manager, Investor Relations, in 2008, then was promoted to director, Investor Relations, in 2009 and to executive director, Investor Relations, in 2011.
