Summer Safety: Report Streetlight Outages to JCP&L

Report a streetlight outage

The sounds of ice cream trucks rolling through the neighborhood. More humidity in the air. Kids playing outside with their friends.

Summer is nearing.

As we all spend more time outdoors, streetlights play a key role in the safety of our communities. In addition to improving visibility, studies show streetlights can help reduce crime.

Repairing streetlights is a common task and a priority for JCP&L. In 2024, crews responded to more than 49,000 streetlight outages, the equivalent of more than 130 per day.

“Streetlights are safety tools, but they also provide an image of comfort in so many of our communities,” said Pat Mullin, JCP&L’s Vice President of Operations. “They let the public know that this is a place to be and a place you’re welcomed, especially in ‘downtown’ areas. We encourage customers to contact us when a light is out on their street or elsewhere in their community to help us make timely repairs.”

How to Report a Streetlight Outage

We rely on customers to let us know when a streetlight is out in their community. When a customer reports a streetlight outage, our line crews and troubleshooters will be dispatched to make repairs as quickly as possible.

Here are the best ways to report a streetlight outage:

  • Call us at 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877) and say “streetlight” after the greeting.

When reporting an outage, let us know:

  • Your name and phone number (in case we need more information)

  • Address where the streetlight is located (nearest house or business address and the nearest cross street)

  • Number on the utility pole

  • What is wrong with the streetlight (damaged pole; broken light fixture; light is off at night, on during the day, or flickers)

Streetlight Repairs

Once a streetlight outage is reported, a crew member will come out to assess the light. Simple problems such as faulty bulbs can often be addressed with immediate repairs. More complex issues may require a fixture replacement or further investigation to determine the cause.

The most common causes for longer streetlight restorations include the need for more complex repairs, especially where lights are served by underground wiring, or access issues such as vehicles that block our trucks from safely reaching the light.

With more than 200,000 streetlights throughout JCP&L’s service territory, crews are working daily to complete repairs on reported streetlight outages. Thank you for helping us keep our communities safe and bright.
