See FirstEnergy Team Members Nearby? Here’s Why

FirstEnergy field employees conduct survey work along the company's rights of way

At FirstEnergy, our mission is simple: to deliver safe and reliable power to homes and businesses. To make this happen, our employees and authorized contractors may need to access certain areas on or near your property. While we do our best to give a heads-up before visiting, it’s not always possible, especially if urgent repairs need to be made.

Where and Why You’ll See FirstEnergy Workers

You may see FirstEnergy representatives working along our rights of way – areas where FirstEnergy’s companies have existing rights to install, operate and maintain electric infrastructure. Accessing these areas – and our facilities – is critical for keeping the grid operating safely and reliably for all our customers.

When you see team members in these areas, they’re performing essential work to help keep power flowing, including:

  • Conducting land and environmental studies along proposed routes to identify optimal locations for new infrastructure.
  • Building, upgrading or fixing equipment, like poles and wires.
  • Performing routine maintenance to help prevent outages and address potential hazards before they become problems.
  • Trimming or removing trees and plants that could interfere with power lines, a leading cause of outages.
  • Checking for unauthorized materials that could pose safety risks, such as sheds, pools or flammable items.
  • Quickly restoring power after storms or other urgent situations.

Smart Meter Visits

We’ve installed more than four million smart meters across our six-state service area, including in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey. Smart meters use advanced technology to allow for automated meter readings and more detailed energy information.

In-person visits may still be needed to verify smart meter data or conduct maintenance. This helps ensure accurate billing and reliable service.

Ensuring Your Safety and Peace of Mind

We understand that seeing workers near your property – especially without prior notice – can sometimes feel unsettling. Your safety and peace of mind are important to us, and we want you to feel prepared should a FirstEnergy representative need to visit your property:

  • All FirstEnergy employees and authorized contractors carry official company-issued photo ID. Don’t hesitate to ask to see it.
  • Representatives should be able to explain the purpose of their visit, whether it’s meter work, surveying land, vegetation management or emergency response.

If you still have questions about the legitimacy of a field employee, please feel free to contact FirstEnergy’s Customer Care team.
