Rain or Shine, Be Storm-Ready Every Time

Rain falling from home gutters

As you squeeze every last drop out of summer, you’re probably spending as much time as you can outdoors – think trampolines, tents and backyard adventures.

As seasons change, it’s still important to be alert for storms that can bring high winds and heavy rain. By taking a few simple precautions, you can help keep these last summer days safe no matter the weather.

Prep Like a Pro Before the Winds Blow

Severe weather can increase the chance of an extended power outage. Here’s how you can prepare now for whatever Mother Nature has in store:

  • Assemble an emergency kit with the following items:

    - Fully charged devices and car charger

    - Flashlight, portable radio and extra batteries

    - First-aid kit

    - Bottled water and convenience foods that don’t require cooking

    - Personal health items

High winds can quickly turn everyday items into airborne hazards. If a storm is forecast, secure outdoor items and stay alert. They can get tangled in power lines or damage electrical equipment, creating dangerous situations.

If an object is stuck in power lines, do not attempt to retrieve it. Call 888-LIGHTSS and we’ll get it back for you.

Storm Cleanup Starts with Caution

If a thunderstorm leaves a mess behind, always treat downed or low-hanging power lines as live and dangerous. They can remain energized – or become energized – without warning and even energize the ground.

Follow these downed line safety tips:

  • Stay at least 30 feet away from the line and anything it may be touching.

  • If something gets caught in or near power lines, never try to retrieve it yourself.

  • Call 9-1-1 to report a downed power line.
