Energy Supply Prices to Increase in Ohio: Here’s What That Means for You
We know that managing your energy costs is important to you. That’s why we’re committed to providing you with the information and tools you need while continuing to deliver the safe, reliable power you deserve.
For many Ohio customers, electric supply prices will increase on June 1. We’re here to break down what’s happening and share programs and resources to help you take control of your energy budget.
Understanding Your Bill
Your electric bill has two main parts:
- Supply charge: This covers the cost of the actual electricity you use. You can choose to purchase electricity from a competitive supplier or receive it from your FirstEnergy electric company through the default service, known as the Price to Compare (PTC).
- Delivery charge: This is the cost for your electric company to deliver electricity to your home or business. These charges are not impacted by changes in supply price.
Due to market conditions, including lower supply and higher demand, all electric supply rates across our region are expected to increase in June. Your FirstEnergy electric company does not generate electricity or control supply prices. We simply deliver electricity to your home or business and pass along costs on behalf of suppliers without a markup.

What You Can Do
We know that any increase in your bill can be concerning, and we’re here to help. There are many ways you can take control of your energy costs, including:
1. Shop for Electricity
While market conditions are impacting all supply prices, you may be able to save money if you find a competitive supplier offering a rate lower than the default rate on your bill (PTC). Now is a great time to review your options so that you can select a rate or program that works best for you. Before choosing a supplier, consider the price, contract length and any additional fees. Visit firstenergycorp.com/customerchoice to learn more.
2. Sign up for Budget Billing
The Equal Payment Plan (EPP) – also known as budget billing – spreads out your costs evenly over 12 months to help even out seasonal highs and lows and make your bill more manageable during colder or hotter months when you may use more energy. You can enroll in EPP and calculate your monthly bill amount in your online account at firstenergycorp.com.
Please note that supply costs from a third-party supplier will not be included in your EPP budget plan. If you select a third-party supplier, we encourage you to contact them directly to learn about billing options.
3. Analyze Usage Tool
Our free Analyze Usage tool can help you determine how you’re using electricity throughout your home and provide tips to manage your usage. You will need to register for an online account to access the Analyze Usage tool.
4. Use Energy Wisely
There are also simple steps you can take to help improve energy efficiency throughout your home, including during warmer months when energy use often increases as your HVAC system works harder. Here are ways to keep your home comfortable and improve electricity use year-round:
- Weatherstrip doors and windows to prevent temperature-controlled air from escaping your home. This will also help take the strain off your cooling and heating systems.
- Keep your HVAC system well-maintained. Clean filters, vents and coils ensure optimal efficiency and extend the life of your equipment
- Turn off lights when you aren’t using them and use a timer for outdoor lighting.
- During warmer months, rotate ceiling fans counterclockwise to create a wind chill effect that can make your space feel cooler.
