Contact 811 Before Starting Spring Digging Projects
Spring is a popular time to get started on outdoor projects, including those that require digging. April is National Safe Digging Month and we’re reminding customers of the importance of calling 811 before starting a digging project – big or small.
Creating a new garden or installing a mailbox might seem like small projects; however, utility lines could be buried just below the surface. Having lines marked before starting any digging project can help prevent potential injury, property damage and utility disruption.
How It Works
If you’re planning a digging project, you will need to contact your local 811 agency, usually a minimum of two to three full business days in advance (excluding holidays). To submit your request, you will provide the street address, locations throughout the property where digging will take place, the type of work being done, method of excavation and any other special instructions that will help ensure utility lines are properly marked. If you are hiring an excavator to complete the work, the excavator should complete this request.
After submitting your request, your state 811 center will let utility operators know they need to locate and mark their buried utility lines on your property with paint or flags. This is a free service. Learn which utilities correspond with each flag color.
Explore this map to see the specific lead time in your area, request to have utility lines marked or learn more about safe digging.
Enjoy the warmer weather and the spring projects it will bring, and always remember to contact 811 before you dig!
