Software Engineers Reimagine the Possible for FirstEnergy Customers
Engineers with experience in a wide range of disciplines are hard at work every day creating and maintaining the technology that FirstEnergy depends on to deliver safe, reliable energy for our customers. Regardless of the discipline, at the core of every engineer is an inquisitive mind powered by a spark of imagination.
Last week, we joined the National Society of Professional Engineers in celebrating National Engineers Week. In step with this year’s theme – “Reimagining the Possible” – we’re thrilled to highlight some of FirstEnergy’s software engineers and their efforts to redefine what’s possible when it comes to serving our customers.
Eyes On the Web
As a software engineer that specializes in web development, Valerie Jones designs website functions that allow FirstEnergy customers to easily manage their electric service. Whether it’s viewing and paying electric bills, reporting outages or making other service requests, she helps make processes faster, easier and more efficient on FirstEnergy’s website.

“I analyze processes to look for innovative ways to function better for customers,” said Jones. “Putting the correct systems in place allows computers to take on the repetitive work, saving time for customers and employees.”
Currently, Jones is designing updates to the website that will allow customers to take control of their electric account in new and exciting ways. The web enhancements will provide ease-of-use improvements for online payment programs, service requests and more.
“By working with business experts to design web solutions for our customers, software engineers are able to help create the best possible customer experience.”
Sky Is the Limit with the Cloud
As a cloud engineer, Matthew Andrews spends most of his time providing the cloud-based programming infrastructure necessary for other teams to work more efficiently. By offloading software and services from physical computers to the cloud via the internet, he helps free up resources necessary to perform computing tasks that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.

“Cloud services have grown exponentially over the years,” said Andrews. “As FirstEnergy increasingly leans on the cloud to improve our computing capabilities, I believe the sky is the limit in terms of what we can do for our customers.”
Andrews is currently supporting a project that will help FirstEnergy utilize artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to predict and identify potential issues on electrical infrastructure. This will allow us to proactively address issues and improve service reliability for customers.
“This is simply the beginning of how cloud engineering will support customers at FirstEnergy,” he said. “I’m extremely excited about the optimization opportunities the cloud will bring in the future.”
Looking to the Future
FirstEnergy is undergoing a digital transformation focused on meeting the evolving expectations of customers, employees and shareholders through accelerated digital delivery and reimagined business processes. With this digital transformation underway, software engineers and other IT professionals will continue to play key roles in making our customers’ lives brighter.
