Security Deposits

Review our credit policies below based on the state that you are moving into.  Please note, at this time, you are not able to pay for a security deposit online prior to your service start date.  However, you can pay by phone, at a payment agency, or by mail.

Ohio and Pennsylvania

A new electric account can be established by:

  • Providing positive identification
  • Satisfying previous debt for utility service
  • Paying a security deposit or residential applicants can provide a guarantor

Ohio Applicants
If you had a prior account for the same class of service within two years of the date of application, we will use your past payment history to determine whether a security deposit or guarantor will be required for your new account.

Pennsylvania Applicants
If service is terminated, restoration of service may differ if someone in the household is a victim of domestic violence with a Protection From Abuse Order (PFA).  In order to receive the PFA protections, a copy of the PFA order is required or a court order issued by a Court of Competent Jurisdiction in this Commonwealth, which provides clear evidence of domestic violence against you.  This information will not be shared with any third party.


New Jersey

A new electric account can be established by:

  • Providing positive identification
  • Satisfying previous debt for utility service
  • Paying a security deposit

West Virginia and Maryland

A new electric account can be established by:

  • Providing positive identification
  • Satisfying previous debt for utility service
  • Paying a security deposit

Non-Residential: If you had a prior account for the same class within the past twelve months, we will use your payment history to determine whether or not a security deposit will be required for your new account.

Residential: If you had a prior account for the same class within the past two years, we will use your payment history to determine whether or not a security deposit will be required for your new account.


New York

A new electric account can by established by:

  • Providing positive identification
  • Satisfying previous debt for utility service

By requesting service, you acknowledge that the utility company has the right to check your credit history to determine whether a security deposit will be required. You also might be asked to provide proof of ownership or occupancy.

Credit Refunds

Credit refunds will be processed by a third-party vendor, Wirecard*, via a prepaid debit card.  For questions regarding the prepaid debit card, please review the frequently asked questions.  

*Citigroup Inc. has sold its prepaid card business to Wirecard AG.  However, Citibank cards that have been issued are still valid for redemption and can be activated and managed on www.prepaid.citi.com.
