We are proud to be a part of the effort to protect threatened birds of prey.
Our Jersey Central Power & Light subsidiary partners with the Conservative Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to help protect populations of threatened American Kestrels and ospreys. Nesting boxes have been placed on utility poles in prime kestrel habitats to replace the declining number of natural nesting sites.
In addition, JCP&L has developed a comprehensive program that includes surveying all the locations where ospreys have started nesting, or given indications of nesting, on JCP&L poles and equipment. New nesting platfroms are identified and built that do not pose a hazard due to proximity to electrical equipment. Learn more about how JCP&L is using drones to survey osprey nests.
Also, our linemen annually assist the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the ODNR in banding osprey chicks living in nests built near FirstEnergy transmission towers. Our efforts play an important role in protecting these endangered birds of prey.
