Little Blue Run

The Bruce Mansfield Plant in Shippingport, Pa., was the first coal-fired power plant in North America built with sulfur dioxide (SO2) scrubbers installed as original equipment. Much of the coal combustion byproducts (CCBs) created through the scrubbing process is used to make wallboard at the single-largest CCB recycling facility in the country. The remaining CCBs are stored at a facility known as Little Blue Run. The material is periodically covered with mulch and vegetation, and water quality is monitored through an extensive system. After 2016, scrubber material will no longer be placed at the site.

 

   

CCB Dry Disposal

Air quality controls FirstEnergy's W.H. Sammis Plant in Ohio, Hatfield's Ferry Plant in Pa., and Ft. Martin, Pleasants and Harrison Plants in W. Va. produce synthetic gypsum as a byproduct. This material, identical to gypsum found naturally in the environment, is then transported to state-of-the-art dry disposal facilities. These facilities utilize liners and leachate protection systems as well as extensive groundwater monitoring to ensure environmental protection.

Used Nuclear Fuel Storage

 

Over time, the ability of nuclear fuel assemblies to produce heat energy diminishes and they must be replaced with new ones. Used fuel assemblies have traditionally been stored in steel-lined, concrete fuel pools within the nuclear plant. As those pools reach capacity, FirstEnergy nuclear facilities are utilizing dry storage structures to accommodate used fuel. Dry storage systems are a proven, effective and secure storage solution.
