To meet this demand, FirstEnergy operates a fleet of coal, nuclear and natural gas power plants to generate the electricity our customers need. To operate these plants, our skilled workforce in Operations and Maintenance work together to ensure plant equipment is maintained to meet industry safety and performance standards, and operates in a reliable, efficient, safe and environmentally responsible manner.

Within the Operations and Maintenance groups at our fossil-fueled power plants, we routinely hire employees to fill the following positions:

  • Power Plant Operator
  • Yard Operator
  • Mechanical Maintenance Repair Person
  • Electrical Maintenance Repair Person
  • Instrumentation and Controls Repair Person

At our nuclear power plants, positions that we routinely fill in our Operations and Maintenance groups include:

  • Instrumentation and Controls Technician
  • Chemistry Technician
  • Non-Licensed Operator
  • Mechanical Maintenance Repair Person
  • Electrical Maintenance Repair Person

Qualified applicants for these positions will possess an applicable 2-year technical degree, or the equivalent experience, and must pass the Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI) POSS/MASS test. Additionally, Power Plant Operators in our fossil plants located in Ohio are required to obtain a Stationary Steam Engine License during their probationary employment period.

If you currently don’t have the required education or experience for these opportunities, please visit our Technical School Alliances page. You’ll learn more about the colleges we work with to provide programs and training necessary for you to begin a successful career at one of our power plants.

To prepare for the required EEI testing, use the free testing brochures and online practice tests provided by EEI and made available on the EEI Testing page of our website.
