The RTO has the responsibility for coordinating the planning and operation of the wholesale electric transmission system that includes all or parts of 11 states and the District of Columbia, including the operation of FirstEnergy's transmission assets within the service areas of Jersey Central Power & Light Company (JCP&L), Metropolitan Edison Company (Met-Ed), and Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec).

FirstEnergy's participation in PJM helps to ensure non-discriminatory access to, and independant operation of, the FirstEnergy transmission system.
