Environmental automotive tips
FirstEnergy has an environmental commitment in both the workplace and at home. At work, we're committed to environmentally sound operations by reducing emissions from our power plants, and at home, we're focused on the sustainable use of two major sources of emissions: our vehicles and gas-powered lawn equipment. The following are tips to help further reduce vehicle emissions:
  • Properly maintain your car by ensuring that it's serviced on a regular basis. This includes changing the fluids as the manufacturer recommends, checking the tires for air pressure and wear, and having your vehicle serviced at a reputable and licensed garage.
  • Go easy on the gas pedal and brakes. Driving habits influence how often we visit the gas pump. Avoid sudden stops and quick acceleration. Accelerate and brake gradually, and shift to overdrive at recommended speeds. This allows the engine to run more efficiently with decreased wear.
  • Idling burns more gas than restarting your car. Avoid long lines at the drive-up window; park and go inside. In the winter, limit the time you spend warming up your car before you drive. Park in the garage, and warm up on the way to your destination.
  • Reduce air conditioning by using a fan or opening windows on days when it's not so hot.
  • Buy vehicles that best suit your needs. Additional options tend to add weight and mileage. Consider overall mileage when you shop for your next car.
  • Join a car pool or a ride-share program. Ride the bus or use another public transit option; the emissions per person are significantly lower than driving a car. Often, cities sponsor transit services to airports, business centers and special events to help reduce costs, congestion and emissions.
