Transportation to the World


Pennsylvania's highways, airports, railways, and ports make the state a vital transportation hub providing a direct link to major national and international markets.  Pennsylvania also offers a wide variety of public transportation services, which is a great asset for businesses and industries.

Highways
Pennsylvania's highway system has nearly 44,000 miles of state-maintained roadways, including over 1,700 miles of interstate highways.

Rail
With more than 5,000 miles of rail line in active service, Pennsylvania is served by all three major eastern railroad systems: Norfolk Southern Railway, CSX Transportation Systems, and Canadian Pacific Railways. Pennsylvania is also served by 70 regional and shortline railroads, providing access to many excellent industrial sites.

Air
Pennsylvania offers 142 public-use airports including 16 scheduled service and 126 general aviation airports, providing residents and businesses with a direct, efficient link to the world. There also are six international airports, with two providing daily flights to Europe.

Ports 
Pennsylvania’s businesses and industries enjoy a diverse and extensive waterway system through the state’s three ports. The Port of Philadelphia provides access to the Atlantic Ocean, and access to the Great Lakes is available through the Port of Erie. The Port of Pittsburgh is the largest inland port in the United States with access to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Pacific Ocean through the Panama Canal.
