Fossil: Generating Power
Technical and Engineering Positions at Our Fossil Plants Join our Fossil Generation team and you'll find yourself right in the middle of the action - making sure our plants continue to run reliably, efficiently, safely, and in an environmentally responsible manner.
Qualified applicants have a two-year technical degree in an appropriate discipline, or the equivalent experience, and must pass the EEI POSS/MASS test (for informational brochures on these tests, visit our EEI Sample Tests and Brochures page). Power plant operators are required to obtain a Stationary Steam Engine license. If you don't already have the necessary experience for these technical positions, FirstEnergy is affiliated with a number of colleges to offer training for you. See the Technical Training page for more information. Our Open Positions page lists the current opportunities in our Fossil plants.
Operator and Maintenance Positions. Take a look at the operation and maintenance positions we offer:
Yard Operator. Not only will you operate unloaders, bulldozers, conveyors, other fuel- and material-handling equipment and yard work equipment, you may also be responsible for overhauling, maintaining, and repairing this equipment and many structures in the yard. Maneuvering barges, rail cars, coal trucks, ask-handling equipment, scaffolding and rigging will be part of your everyday work.
Power Plant Operator. In this position, you'll assist in operating boilers and turbine generators as well as the Air Quality Control Systems and associated equipment. Plus, you'll operate auxiliary equipment such as circulating and condensate system, house service and raw water pumps, auxiliary boilers and traveling screen and inspect, clean, trouble shoot, and help maintain the equipment to ensure that it operates efficiently.
Mechanical Maintenance Repair Person. As part of the maintenance team, you'll work on major plant equipment (boilers and turbines) and plant auxiliary equipment (pumps, pulverizers, heat exchangers and valves). In addition, you'll work with and direct others in assembly, welding, sheet metal work, pipe fitting, machining and rigging.
Electrical Maintenance Repair Person. Members of our electrical team perform skilled electrical maintenance and installation in the plant. Install, test, troubleshoot, calibrate and overhaul plant electrical equipment, circuits, systems, and apparatus - from generators, exciters and motors to uninterruptible power systems (UPS) and electrical equipment on fans, pumps, and cranes, and more.
Instrumentation and Control Repair Person. You and your team will install, inspect, repair, and calibrate the plant's complex meters, gauges, instrumentation, combustion control and data logging equipment. In addition, you'll work on the sophisticated electrical and mechanical control equipment, such as heater drain and bypass controls and feedwater regulating controls.
