Maintaining trees near power lines
Stretching from the Ohio-Indiana border to the New Jersey shore, FirstEnergy's long-distance, high voltage transmission lines provide electricity to distribution systems serving 4.5 million customers, and serve as vital links to neighboring utilities across the country. Keeping our transmission and distribution rights-of-way free of incompatible trees and other vegetation is key to ensuring reliable and safe electric service.
Trees are a leading cause of electrical power outages. In fact when trees and power lines touch it is a very dangerous situation and may even be deadly to anyone in close proximity.
To help maintain safe, reliable electric service, FirstEnergy's Vegetation Management Program controls trees, shrubs and brush growing around our facilities and equipment - including power lines. |

Periodically, professional vegetation management crews apply vegetation management techniques to prevent trees within the rights-of-way from interfering with the electrical facilities. A variety of techniques including power saws, EPA-approved herbicides, mechanical equipment, or a combination of methods is evaluated and the best option is selected for each situation.
Compatible shrubs that do not interfere with electric facilities are not disturbed. A diverse mixture of grasses, low growing shrubs and other ground cover preferred by birds, deer and small animals promote a thriving wildlife habitat. In this way, well-managed electric rights-of-way provide food and cover wildlife need to survive.
